Long term plugin writer and Motion guru Patrick Sheffield has moved two of his popular plugins over to the FxFactory delivery method. Priced At $19 and $29, they're not going to break the bank stylizing your footage.

Motion fans may recall seeing Patrick as the top helpful member on the Apple Motion forum before the complete redesign wiped away his (and others grrr) ranking. He's also written a very popular book 'How to Cheat at Motion' which uses effect building examples rather operational tutorials to teach readers. The book was written for Motion3/4 but applies to Motion5 as well.

Patrick has now released two plugins under the Sheffield Softworks brand, Vintage a $19 plugin that emulates classic film looks and the $29 Look Sweet II package of four plugins which 'sweeten' ordinary mundane video. Lets face it, there is a lot of ordinary mundane video out there!

Both products have been released via FxFactory, the popular authoring and distribution program from Noise Industries. Using this method, the plugins will run on Final Cut Pro 6,7 and FCPX, Motion 3,4 and 5, After Effects CS3, CS4, CS5 & CS5.5

We couldn't find any demo videos, but we did locate the Noise Industries' tutorial videos, let's start with Vintage.

"At the beginning of the last century there were a number of competing methodologies used to bring color to black and white film. Some of these processes used reduced color recording techniques, like Multicolor and Technicolor 2 Strip. Others, like Technicolor 3 Strip, recorded the full color palette, but in a way that differs from modern color film.·Vintage provides settings for:

  • Technicolor 3 Strip.
  • Technicolor 2 Strip.
  • Multicolor.

All of the film techniques emulated by·Vintage recorded color by passing the image through colored filters and exposing separate images on black and white film. Technicolor 2 Strip recorded the red and green images, Multicolor recorded red and blue. Both of these techniques could reproduce decent skintones, but Multicolor could not reproduce greens, and Technicolor 2 Strip had no blue channel. Technicolor 3 Strip recorded red, green, and blue. Because of this and the separate strip recording, 3 Strip produced the beautiful technicolor spectrum."

Look Sweet II is a pack of four plugins.

"The Look Sweet II plugins are designed to sweeten the look of your mundane, troubled, or ordinary footage."

Mr. Fixit EZ is the ultimate, easy to use footage rescue system. Using HDR photography techniques, Mr. fixit eZ builds the brightest possible shadows and the darkest possible highlights and allows you to mix them back into the original image without affecting the color. It also gives you the option to flatten the highlights, giving an overall brighter image.

Vibrance Plus gives you fine control over saturation and desaturation of your clips. It increases chroma faster in the lower saturation areas, so you get a more vibrant image. Dragging the slider negative decreases the chroma in higher saturation areas faster than lower ones. The "plus" modes are Pastel, which turns high chroma areas pale, and Enhance, which slightly brightens higher chroma areas so can give people an "inner glow".

Bounce Fill simulates the use of a colored bounce fill reflector. This defaults to a gold reflector, but can be set to any color. Because the reflectivity of items in the image varies according their color relationship to the color of the reflector, an optional invert clip can alter the influence of the fill light based on an object's color.

Super Glam gives your footage the final polish. It's a combination of sharpening highlights and softening shadows. This processing can be done on the full color image, or on the luminance alone, leaving chroma untouched. Super glam can really bring dull footage to life.

Both products have a free trial available within FxFactory.
