bulletproof fcpx

It has been demoed at trade shows, meetups and has been in beta for a few months, but BulletProof from Red Giant is finally with us. They've also released new compilation packs of products based on tasks.

Red Giant has released BulletProof 1.0, a $199 application that aims to bridge the gap between the camera and the editor. It's more than just a DIT tool as it not only backs up the card data from the camera, but it also performs tasks to make the footage ready for use in an NLE. We know that there is an overlap in functionality with FCPX, but this will be of use to all NLE users, especially those on FCP7. Let's face it, the task of getting multiple camera formats into 7 is certainly not as easy or as quick as X.

We have used FCPX as a basic DIT tool on set and although it works, it's not what the app was designed for. BulletProof makes sure the data goes to multiple disks and performs checksums to guarantee the integrity of the copies. It's also a quick way of making burnt-in-timecode H264 copies.

Norman Hollyn, Professor at USC's School of Cinematic Arts put it well:

"The irony of modern production is that, as the tools have gotten more accessible and easy to use, the support for filmmakers has gotten more complicated.  Codecs, multiple distribution formats, an increase in camera formats, requirements among NLE's - everything has conspired to make the advantages of easy-to-access filmmaking, harder to work with. I think Bulletproof will help address an important part of that complexity - the world of moving the footage from the set to the editing room."

The Bulletproof workflow is from left to right on the screen through 5 steps.

  • Import: Offload Your Files. Select clips or whole cards and import into a catalog with backup to multiple destinations for safety.
  • Organize: Organize Your Files. View the whole catalog, and sort clips with folders and playlists with essential tools for flagging, sorting and searching for clips.
  • Review: Review Your Files. Play individual clips to check their color, and focus with support for JKL keyboard control for playback and marker support.
  • Refine: Edit Color and Metadata. Apply first-pass color adjustments and add metadata about the shoot for export to popular editing tool through XML.
  • Export: Deliver Your Files. Queue and export the clips with embedded timecode and metadata without transcoding, or as ProRes or web formats.

We visited the Red Bullet stand at NAB 2013 and got a BulletProof demo from Simon Walker

Red Giant has published this quick run through of BulletProof if you don't like two Brits rabbiting on for 10 minutes.

The coupon code GetBulletProof99 will get you BulletProof for $99 or half price, but we have no indication how long the offer will last for. (We tried the code for ourselves and it was still working on the 31st July)

Red Giant have also released two new suites of apps for filmmakers.

Red Giant Shooter Suite ($399.00)

Red Giant Shooter Suite includes five applications that give filmmakers the freedom to shoot the way they want, with the confidence that their footage will make it to the timeline intact, with audio synced and all on set decisions carried over. Shooter Suite includes BulletProof, and PluralEyes 3 for fast automatic audio syncing, eliminating the need for clappers and time cues that come with multi-cam shooting. Shooter Suite also includes LUT Buddy for sharing color decisions made on set, Instant HD for up-rezzing, and Frames for deinterlacing to integrate the footage you just shot with older video formats sharing the edit.

Red Giant Color Suite ($599.00)

Red Giant Color Suite contains six essential applications for color grading and effects. Color Suite enables filmmakers to remove digital noise with Denoiser II, then soften skin tones with Cosmo. Color Suite also includes professional color correction with Colorista II and LUT Buddy, Magic Bullet Looks 2 for adding beautiful color treatments, and Mojo to give you the look of a Hollywood blockbuster, in seconds.

We will have more on DIT tools and FCPX shortly, stay tuned!
