Thank you Simon
you are greatly appreciated.
ok, tried it... seems a little buggy?
was gorgeous at first, then as it tried to enlarge the font size, a weird numbered gradient appeared across the top of the text, then after that, the scrolling stopped, so the type just appeared at the beginning of the sequence with no animation
couldn't get the scrolling movement back no matter what I tried
finally went with an apple title effect, but I've kept yours tinker with it again
I've added to this thread, rather than just editing my previous post, because I found a workaround with the TKY Scroller. Some others may have written this little gem off or forgotten about it. Let's take another look
After you type the text into the little onscreen box, you have to manually drag it off screen to set its starting place. The problem with trying to do this, is that the FCPX Viewer window has to be shrunk down beyond what the presets list. On your pulldown menu 25% is the smallest view available, but if you have a long scroll of text, or a large photo you're working with, you need to hit Command "-" (that's the minus sign), to shrink it further to 15%. Then you have plenty of room to drag the text off. Let it render, then it should scroll.
Yes, it's still a little buggy. The onscreen pointer or curser becomes a text icon placer making it difficult to resize boxes. I was unable to move the text up or down inside the banner.
Still, the effect is a nice addition to your video & we appreciate all the work that went into producing this little scroller.

Re: TKY FCPX News-Style Scrolling Lower Third Title Effect - UPDATED 2.1

This effect was made last July when we still only had the first version of Motion 5 and the first version of FCP X - it worked fine back then, but clearly some of the changes made to the text tool in FCP X in subsequent versions have broken something.
In order to fix it it would need to be rebuilt ... hmmmmmm.
I would just say however that there is a handy checkbox for making the text start off screen which still works just fine! There shouldn't be any need for dragging things around to achieve this.
BTW it's best to input the text in the text pane of the Inspector (rather than onscreen) where you can easily see what you're doing, or even paste the contents of a text file.
Oh and what do you know, it looks like I've just rebuilt it - it seems to be working predictably now.
