Hi gang,

New here, and my first post looks like it got zapped among my first bunch to get past the three moderated post rule... Would like to make some new friends here, and nothing says friends like free beer! errr free 3D models in this case :). If I'm breaking rules re links/images/anything please let me know!

I'm going to combine a few posts into one here to avoid making a bunch of 3D threads. Shout out to the others on here that I'm seeing create 3D models, such a cool niche lil' world we're in :).

Motion 5 isn't the greatest at handling 3D, and you can only mess with fonts not actual shapes/panels re materials so it's nota Maya/Lightwave/3DS but she still renders beautifully and for basic objects it does the job.

At any rate, here is my recent 3D'ing templates I want to share with you as I get comfy in here :)

1. MAC studio with 3 drop zones.

2. DrumMachine x 2 different models.

ENJOY!! if you have any Q's or feedback - I welcome it!

Cheers,
Norbz.

Welcome to forum Norbz !!. Yesterday I sent you a private message because I did not know how to communicate with you, inviting you to open a topic for your works, and now I see that you did it. Very well. As you could see, I divided my work in two places: one for projects in the forum Motion, and another in the templates where I share my models. I am very happy to have another who loves to experiment and squeeze the environment 3D text. As I told you yesterday I find your works very interesting and specials. I hope the birth of a group of people with whom to exchange experiences that make us discover better and better the 'use of this jewel and affordable software that's Motion.

Hi Pielle, thank you for the warm welcome and PM's :).

I'm not sure if you've tried other apps like Daz, Bryce, 3DStudioMax, but if you love 3D you may love those more as they open up a world of possibilities to actual 3D, modelling, and being in charge of every polygon more.

I actually really hope Motion 6 (if that ever happens) or a future release of 5, looks at real 3D applications and opens up a few more tubes for us re the full range of what is possible in 3D and traditional modelling technics. I've now reached pretty much MAX stress tests on my objects, and they are rather basic, and I'm on a really powerful MAC so I know most users won't be able to even load a frame let alone animate my more advanced templates and tests so I don't release them :(. So having said that we have to learn that balance of finding a sweet spot of 3D quality/idea/execution and usability for common end users. Even on my current templates a few of them are probably going to be non-usable (or frustrating at least) to any older or slower machines..

At any rate, for what it does, and for the possibilities it opens up, it's F*n awesome! I also have mObject but it's still not really that much different re limits and I'm finding modelling right in Motion 5 easier and just as flexible so I'm not even using it anymore.

Also I think your stuff is amazing as well Pielle, as are all the 3D examples I stumbled upon here :), and it's great finding fellow talent in a similar lane so I look forward to chopping it up with you guys!

Thanks again.

Hi Norbz,

wow wow wow WOW! Impressive! ...

Thanks for sharing, esp. the making-of - tons of valueable info and hints... you're main 'trick' is excellence in setting lights B) kudos.

The 'garage' is simple in the making, but very very impressive lit, simple, but impressive - that's what photography is all about. (try adding motion-blur and DoF to your set ...)

Your post instantly inspired me a) for a new project, b) I suggested Peter, our host, to consider a new category here at fcp.co, just to discuss 3D.... I have zillions of questions, but my chitchat would dilute sections like these, which, in my humble understanding are more meant for post'n done......

More, please!!!

Hi Karsten!

Thank you for the kind words :).

I wouldn't call lighting a trick as much as just understanding good composition, as lighting is important in any medium (and I understand shadows really well when working with multiple lights, so I take it as seriously as a movie set even though it's 3D/fake). Yes i've played with the DOF a bit and will more on future projects for sure but I wanted these clear for users to animate with (and a few of them have DOF/MB in the published parameters).

Hey if we can get a 3D section just for this kinda stuff that would be awesome.

Don't be shy re your questions I don't mind a bit of explaining and or it will help me with creating my next tutorial/video.

I'm glad this stuff inspired you to build and yes it's all about simple but effective perception in 3D.

More coming soon, I'm working on another one right now :).

Hi Norbz

I didn't want to diminish your skills in setting lights!! But, your 'garage' is 90% smart usage of light... I'm LOVING it!
Don't be shy re your questions

although this is a kind of threadjacking:
In your drum-machien demo, how do make the switches 'glow'? It looks like the real thing, semi-transparent plastic, off=dull/on=glow ... do you switch materials? do you use diff. opacity? ... is this 'real' light from behind, but how do you do then semi-transparency??

... you see, a 1000 Qs, 10k ideas, so lil' time....

Norb I agree with all you have written. I worked with Bryce Poser Daz Logomotion and so on since their birth and now google SketchUp, blender and Kinemac. Also I have bought mObject and have come to your own conclusions, especially when I built the quadcopter I could not be working with levels to create different centers of rotation to animate the engines.I always felt the problem to remain in the limits of animation in real time M5 trying to create models to share easy to animate for common computer resources. This is why I first shared the quadcopter model simpler and then the "golden one" much more difficult to animate but still usable because with the Macbook Pro was used in the animation “A world within a world" in the topic real 3D, and while providing the animation template as usual, not recommended the use of non-optimized models for FCPX.I always tried to stimulate a debate on the 3D text environment. I always tried to stimulate a debate on the environment 3D text so we can grow together, maybe it's that time.

@ Karsten = Cheers I didn't take it as diminishing, and you're right, it is kind of a 'trick' because if you do it right it adds some magic that's hard to capture in a shot otherwise :). Sorry if I sounded defensive just wanted to explain there is nothing extra or special I'm doing. It is a great compliment so thank you :).

Lights on the drum machine: The blue light coming off the screen is literally a blue light, with low intensity sitting just above the screen in 3D and giving off just the right amount of glow/falloff (falloff settings are really important).

Lights on the pads: I tried a few different things, including making the pads translucent, making the light sit IN the pad vs above it, I'm still not too comfy with Motion 5 to say what's best but so far having the lights sit right above your object just like the blue light seems to have best results for simulating something glowing or lighting up internally.

Equally as important to your lights are your materials of what the light is hitting. The pads use a dull flat material so it looks more like rubber and less shiny/reflective like plastic. This is where I find M5's strength so far, is the materials and the ability to add layers to your materials and import/create your own in the mix (you'll see me quickly make one and import it in the 3DCharacter timelapse video).

--

@ Pielle = Cool so you know a lot about 3D already too, that's awesome. I can already envsion what types of tools/functions I'd love to have added to M5, but most importantly would be to simply create shapes, 3D them, and add materials without using fonts :(. I even looked at a few of the more expensive 'create your own font' progams so I can start a library of useable and interesting 'shapes' vs webdings/wingdings/dingbats/damndings!! and I'm not going to go that far...

However before I forget - here is a COOL site I found where you can combine a ton of icons, and compile them into a masterfont, then arrange/copy/paste the icons into M5 and have some more cool shapes to start with at least (you'll have to distribute the font as well for others to use it):

icomoon.io/app/#/select

And here's tools to create custom shapes as fonts:

fontstruct.com

www.glyphsapp.com

And after re-reading my post, I'm again BAFFLED why M5 doesn't allow you to add materials to a shape you've taken into 3D, just fonts, same pixels, same resources, making it so much more difficult for us than it needs to be - arghhhhh :silly:. My other wish would be more polygons and smoothing shapes together (and obviously a better 3D engine, which is probably what's preventing any of the above from even happening in the first place).

Norbz You have not read my old post because you would have known that I long since design fonts that I need for my models. I already know all the sites you have listed and in any case I usually design the forms in svg format and convert them to fonts in a free site glyphter.com. If you go in real 3D and watch the animation Merry Christmas and download the template you will find the font "Ornithopter-Regular.ttf" (which I designed to build Leonardo's ornithopter Used in animation Sunset flight) of this font I used some glyphs to build the flat forms for Pandoro. In your operating system is an "Apple symbols" font ,what is a real mine. You can analyze it thoroughly with "PopChar X" it also shows you the character drawn by other users like me, or use the system "Character Viewer” From the Edit menu, choose Emoji & Symbols ( support.apple.com/en-us/HT201586 ). To draw the fonts read information that sc fox provides to Karsten the "22 March 2016 18:45" in the topic SCRABBLe text generator for crossword experts. They are very useful

Thanks for that.

I admit no I have not read all the posts just yet, but I did note your recent ones re phone/quadcopter/macbook and yes I saw the scrbbl one quickly, from the quadcopter I figured you're already using custom shapes so sorry for repeating if this is now common knowledge here hopefully it still helps ppl as it was aimed at everyone not just the few 3d pros :).

It all comes down to creativity and creative use of shapes at the end of the day - I'm currently working on one that is using nothing more than arial font vs webdings and it's a complex scene so I'm going to try to not use custom fonts too often re ease of use for end users. I like glyphter though that's a good lil site.

Cheers!
