This is a title effect that sits on a layer above your video. A 6x3 grid of boxes divides up the source picture. There are 5 colored boxes in complementary colors that can be positioned wherever you want them, an optional text box and a "clear panel" function that selectively removes sections of the grid.
See the video for what it can do ...
Lots of controls for pretty much everything:

Yes, you can of course use this for live action video - I just hesitated because I don't have any suitable footage handy but here's an example so you can see (using some rubbish footage).
Given that this is a title (adjustment) layer you can put it over any material you like, even over a split screen so that you could fill different squares with different images ... Lots of possibilities.
It's probably going to suit things like fashion, beauty and food the best but really you can use it anyway you want.

I strongly recommend the use of Spherico's Motion Template Tool which makes everything easy and keeps it all tidy - even if you don't have Motion installed.

Added Motion 5 yesterday and tried the free Motion Template Tool and still wont install. Have purchased packages from FX Factory and FCPeffects and they install and work fine. Would rather spend a few buck and have it install, rather than spend more time fiddling. At this point I give up.

Sorry to hear you're still having problems but Motion Template Tool does make it very easy I can assure you.
Download the attached zip and double-click to open it. Inside you will find a folder called TKY Mondrian Squares. Open that up and you will see another folder (ignore that) and an installer called TKY Mondrian Squares.mtt.
Double-click that and it will launch Motion Template Tool. Make sure you have selected your user under Select Users (but you shouldn't need to have to change this). Click "Install for Selected Users" at the bottom right hand corner and the installation is done.
Note that you will find this effect inside FCP X under Titles/TKY Titles (not under Effects.)
Alternatively (now that you have Motion 5 installed), double-click the zip file, open the resulting folder, select the folder called "TKY Mondrian Squares Title" and drag in to your User/Movies/Motion Templates/Titles folder. And you're done.
Again make sure you look for the effect under Titles - and not Effects - inside FCP X.
But getting to grips with Motion Template Tool will hugely improve the overall handling of your Motion Templates so it's well worth taking a few minutes to try and use it.

Also the sliders for positioning the text box for both x and y should be used by everyone putting out plug ins. Works much better than packages, I paid for. Amazingly good.

And thanks for the feedback. The position silder concept is borrowed from my Tokyo Split Animator plug-in available through FxFactory - if you'll excuse the shameless plug
I use Simon's Split Animator quite a bit. It is very useful. I purchased the plug-in through FXFActory and just think Simon deserves a plug from a user to back up his own shameless plug!
