The animated pre-made titles in FCPX have certain parameters that have been "published". These are the only parameters you can alter within FCPX. For example, I just dropped an animated lower third graphic on my project. When I select it, I can go to the inspector and click the 1st tab. That inspector window gives me several options of things that can be changed. If it isn't in that window then you're stuck with the default. You can always get Motion if you need to be able to adjust more parameters.

Right-click on it in FCPX and choose ‘open copy in Motion’
(Demands, you do have Motion installed ;) )

Keep in mind:
• Depending of complexity of title, changing/adding parameters can be a difficult task, you have to be able to ‘read the code’
• even the simple ones can hide a lot of excellence, snapshots and rigs as an example, no beginners task
• Not all parameters can be published, such as Audio Controlled Behaviors, Motion Blur etc
• You always tinker with a copy… when you get lost, or bend it beyond crash, just trash it and try again ;)
• Many 3rd party plugins are ‘protected’ to be opened in Motion (FxFactory stuff as an example), or are ‘programmed’/made with the pluginDevKit (coremelt stuff as an example) = can not be customized…

So i went and bought Motion last night and sat down (for way longer than id like to admit) and figured out the basics and made an animated title from scratch that was 100% what i imagined in my head starting out, complete with keyframes for grow/shrink, opacity, font tracking, gaussian blur, some shapes. Loving motion so far! Thanks!
