Hi Guys,

I have a questions. We make vlogs, normally we filmed with different FPS settings (GoPro, magic, and main camera)
We edited in 23,98 fps timeline in FCPX.

Now we are editing a project in 23,98 fps and for the first time we realise how choppy that mavic air footage (2,7k 60fps) is after rendering compared to the super smooth shot straight form the sd card. Now we are editing in a 59,94 fps timeline and it works fine.

I have the feeling that before FCPX was able to convert the fps settings itself, but somehow it doesn't do it anymore. I tried all the 4 different frame options (Floor, neighbour, blending and Optical Flow) but nothing helps.

There project starts kind of cinematic and the second part is talking. So if we edit in 59,94 fps the last parts is kind of choppy and if we edit in 23,98 fps the first part is.

Help guys, otherwise we are screwed haha. We climbed to the top of a mountain to make the shots so redoing them is not that easy.

Thank a lot in advance

You can't combine non-multiple progressive frame rates without (a) changing the speed or (b) some kind of visible artifact. With interlaced broadcast TV it's possible to convert 24p to 60i using 3:2 pulldown but this takes advantage of frame blending using interlaced fields. It doesn't work that way for converting between 23.98p and 29.97p, or between 23.98p and 59.94p. Note 23.98 and 59.94 are often abbreviated as 24 and 60 fps, which is confusing.

For 29.97p in a 23.98p timeline the easiest solution is use Modify>Retime>Automatic Speed, and that will slow the 29.97 footage to 80% and it will be smooth. This may be possible for non-dialog shots like drone footage.

For 59.94p footage it will show 40% speed which is smooth but often too slow. You can then create a compound clip from that footage, then apply 2x retime to the CC and it will be 80% speed vs the original footage, yet should be fairly smooth. Try that.
