I'm testing some footage for a project, and have imported some 8k VV .r3d footage into FCPX. It displays plays back easily on my iMac Pro, but there is no raw adjustment available and the footage is coming in as rec709.

Does fcpx 10.4.5 still require and extension from red? For some reason I thought FCPX was able to edit red natively now. I don't want to install an old plugin if it's not required. Can anyone give me a heads up here? Thanks.

Sorry I don't have an answer but for speed sake you should do a search on www.reduser.net/forum/forum.php.

You def want the Apple Workflow installer (I have been using the beta version for many months now with no problems) and it gives you access to the editable RAW files. It is no hassle at all. Also, I shoot RED 8K Helium 2 to 3 times a week and do post on up to 6 three camera shoots a week, and I would strongly urge you to "point" to the .r3d files, rather than ingest them into the library. There are a lot of settings in IPP2 that are really only accessible from REDCINE-X which you will also want. (another free download from RED). The great thing is that the changes you make to the files in REDCINE-X ripple up through FCPX. Not the case if you ingest. Ingesting loses the sidecar metadata files and you want those associated with the footy.

Thanks. Yeah I always point as a matter of my workflow. I installed the beta and it works now. There's a bit of learning curve to it, so am working my way through. It's funny that for the first time in the four+ months I've owned my iMac Pro, the fans turned on. Lol. They only stayed on for about a minute and then turned off. but I was like WTF is THAT? Then I realized what it was..

You will definitely want to know more about IPP2 and how to use it. Set the RAW thingy in FCPX to REDWideGamut Log3G10. In FCPX I use what I call a LUT stack...with color wheels on top, color curves next, HSL curves next, then finally the LUT effect. I start with low contrast very soft rolloff (these LUTS are available on RED website....It is not the full IPP2 workflow you can get going in Resolve but it is pretty good....makes a huge difference. FWIW, I do this on a 12 core full maxed trash can from 2014 with no problems

Thanks bro.

Yeah it's surprisingly fast on my base model iMac Pro, even with 8k VV files. It's not instant, but with background rendering on, and several grades, it still chugs along. It's a bit choppy playback while grading, but pause for maybe 15-20 seconds and it's pretty much playable at high quality. Thanks for the tips on the lots from Red.
