So I have a decent size project that I cannot get to share / render. I just continually get the "beach ball" and have to force quit.

I have done the following...
- Trashed Prefs
- Deleted peaks and thumbnails

The 1080 project consists of about an hour of ProResHQ interviews on green screen. I have pre-comped that footage over their backgrounds sent that to have the client pull selects. Once I received those notes I pre-comped it again to trim it down based on the notes (this allowed me to use the time-code generator and keep everything consistent even with trims). I wouldn't think that a couple layer of pre-comps would cause this issue.

My system is an iMac 5K, 32gb ram and 4gb GPU. My footage / projects are on a TB2 enclosure.

I really hope someone can help me with this as I have been working for hours just to try to get the final 35 minute piece exported and I MUST deliver this ASAP.

Turn off Background Rendering and NEVER turn it back on.
Select the Library in the Browser.
Go to the File menu, to "Delete All Generated Library Files" to delete ALL render files.

I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that I did delete generated files and I always keep background rendering off.

The beach ball means the app is non-responsive, not that render/export is taking a long time. Otherwise you could open the progress clock at the upper left and cancel the operation.

As a standard preliminary procedure, make sure you have plenty of free disk space on all volumes. Then run Disk Util First Aid on all volumes. Then rebuild all Spotlight indexes: support.apple.com/en-us/HT201716

What happens if you just render the timeline (CTRL+R) not export it? Does that hang, or only when you try to export it?

The next step is make a project snapshot, press the R key and draw a range over about 1/2 the timeline, then try to export that. If that works, try the 2nd half. If both hang, then try 1/4 of it.

If those all hang, use Edit>Remove Effects on your snapshot, and with all effects removed try to export it. That helps isolate whether it's an effect. If that works OK, make another snapshot (or undo the remove effects), select about 1/2 of the timeline, and remove effects from that. If necessary try 1/4, etc. until you narrow down what clip and what effect.

If you have a time-critical situation, and if only segments will render/export, you can do 1/4 of it at a time, then re-import those, join them together and re-export the whole.
