Hi. Can anyone shed some light on the fact that FCPX no longer supports the import of Sony XDCAM footage shot on an EX3. It just crashes and Apple support say it's a Sony problem!! when in fact it's High Sierra that is the problem?

I have a library-full of XDCam materials that I need to use on occasion. I feel your pain.

Because Sony has , historically, been very slow to publish updates to support the latest Mac OS, I keep an old Mac Mini at the back of our shop that's frozen on the last supported OS. That way, whenever, we need to unwrap XDCam files, we can use Sony XDCam Browser on that Mac Mini. Then shuttle the media over to one of our up-to-date edit bays.

You have a weird way to look at it, I think. Sony states very clearly on their apps page that High Sierra is not yet supported. My interpretation of this situation is that it's most clearly a SONY thing.

My suggestion for running an editing shop: Never update your money-making Macs, until you are sups positive that it won't cause problems. Hope you have an older mac you can put Sierra on while you wait for Sony to revise their stuff.

Here's a link to monitor Sony's progress in the matter: It's a link to their Japanese support site, which is usually first to post the updates. (Caution: Don't hold your breath waiting)
www.sony.jp/xdcam/support/download/drive_software_download.html

Hope I'm wrong, and they update soon, because it's a pain in the rear.

Thanks Scott. It's July and there is still no solution. You can't import XDCAM into FCP 10.4 on High Sierra. It immediately crashes FCP.

That website has an XDCAM Drive update but in looking inside, there isn't an updated XDCAM plugin for FCP. I am interested in a place on the Sony website to report a problem but they don't seem to have one.

As a work around to using the El Capitan backup system, I use Catalyst Browse (free download) to ingest the XDCAM footage from the SxS cards onto the RAID. THen, using it's EXPORT capability, generate .MXF files. If you specify XDCAM as the "Type", it won't recompress. But it now takes twice the time to ingest and twice the about of storage.

I guess this is specific to the EX3 as originally posted. XDCAM HD422 imports perfectly as shot on a PXW-X180 under High Sierra.
Creating history....one edit at a time !

That's interesting and hopeful Doug. Mine failed with both EX1r and F3 (XDCAM 35MBS) SxS cards.
