So I see this new file I don't think I've ever seen before. What is an Effects.map file? I can guess, but just wondering, is this a new 10.4 thing?

Not seen that. What’s your guess?

It has something to do with Effects, I'd guess. What does "map" stand for?

… but it's in older/before 10.4 Libs too, which are not updated yet …
What is an Effects.map?

Doing some online research, seems a .map file can be one of many different things.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAP_(file_format)

So Apple could be using it for anything. I'm going to guess it holds settings and such for effects (audio, video) in that specific Library? Is the squiggly line above in the icon an audio waveform, or a freehand drawn line? What are the three blocks lower in the icon? Beginning, middle, end, of what? Video, audio, effects modules?

If we could still edit our profiles here, I'd use it as my avatar icon...

I help you, my big friend, it's actually five 'blocks', 3 white, 2 black:

hmm, do you see now? ;)
a piano keyboard!

BUT …

Have you took a look inside such an Effect.map file, e.g TextWrangler?
lots of yadda I don't understand, but lists here all custom built Motion.templates, example
<string>Movies/Motion Templates.localized/Titles.localized/B2/Timer B2/Timer B2.moti</string>

('Timer B2' is a plugin I made for my football reports, in a group of effects called 'B2')

… fantasizing of a Motions successor (Apple naming scheme: mailing.app=Mail, previewing.app=Preview, etc) called Effects … and that file is 'mapping' to it … now THAT would be … fun. :woohoo:

but doesn't explain an 'audio only' icon … hmmm
or, one should see a keyframe-curve from Motion latest 'Overshoot'

(boah, Apple, really! a 1pt line in dark purple on dark grey!)

… tadahh, case closed:
A mapping file, directing some 'effects' to forthcoming new member of Pro Video Tools 'Effects'

What else? LOL
I LOVE to speculate … hahaha…

I found the icon source, and the Finder is using an icon form Rektor, a module in the Native Instruments library. Yep, I'm a bit Native Instruments junkie when it comes to music composition. My Finder claims any .map file (and there are several from different applications) are all Rektor files. So much for the icon, and explains why it looks like a keyboard and audio waveform. So that's going to be unique to my system (or anyone who has the Native Instruments "Rektor" module installed).

Karsten opened up one of these files, so I did too, and I only see reference to third party Motion templates. So my theory at present it, if you use a third party Motion template in a Timeline, it gets "mapped" here in this file. Along with some actual program code I can't decipher.

I think that file reports to FCPX whether the storage location for effects has been set to "in the library" or "in the Motion Templates Folder", and maybe further tracks which effects are stored inside the library if that is how the user set the locations. Just another guess.
