Not sure if it's definitely the 10.4 update, but I'm now finding that importing from my SxS card reader is noticeably slower than before, as are things like applying stabilisation to a clip.
Anyone else find things slower in 10.4?

Yes, in the Virtual Users Group (see front page) Sam Metzman from LumaForge stated they tested and found Macs that go through a simple upgrade seem to have performance issues, and Macs that did fresh installs of macOS and FCPX didn't have that issue. Should be fixed in the next patch update. You're not alone, there are other posts here about this same issue.

Thanks. I hadn’t realised, I must have missed the previous posts.
It does seem strange that an update slows things down, but a fresh install doesn’t!
Not everyone wants to go through a fresh install each time or have to wait for an update to resolve the issue!
Shouldn’t Apple be able to sort this from the initial release?

No, Apple, nor any other software developer can anticipate ever combination of hardware and software configurations folks out there have. Simply physically impossible. Not everyone is having the slow down. So Apple has to get the feedback and figure out what is causing it. That's why the feedback page is so VITALLY important for folks to fill out.

I don't have time to do fresh installs, I'm simply always pressed for deadlines. I do plan ahead and have a time where I can do updates/upgrades, and have to put my faith in that. I've rarely every had issues.

Bear in mind I'm repeating what Sam said, he never offered any official numbers or tasing statistics. So it could be there are fresh installs out there seeing the slow down we've simply not heard about yet. But based on the available data, this is where we stand.

I have worked in tech support for close to 20 years. A fresh install will always clear out code that is no longer need. This also works on any of the iOS devices. If any of your devices are slow the fresh install will definitely help.

I'm a retired IT engineer, also. And yes, that's the theory.

Optical Flow Analysis definitely faster

I've noticed 4K (UHD) footage from a Sony A7SII plays significantly better on an ageing 2011 i7 MBP than it did in 10.3

anyone who's experienced 4K h264 footage on Premiere will know how impressive that is.

I noticed right away after my 10.4 upgrade that everything, except timeline skimming, introduced a slight delay..about a full second across the board for anything I do, very noticeable. My 10.4 is also freezing up several times a work shift, requiring a complete reboot of MacOS to get it to open again, even after forced restarts of the app.

Another irritation is that Apple seems to have removed the ability to use the up/down/left/right arrow keys with things like the color correction and exposure panel...used to be able to nudge the pucks around digit by digit, but now, i have to do it with the touchpad, which takes longer for fine adjustments.

Again, the Virtual Users Group (see front page) Sam said they found "updated" Macs tend to have this issue, "fresh install" Macs don't, but that's not universal across the board, either. I updated and didn't see any of the delays.

Arrow keys still work in FCPX 10.4 just fine for me.

FCPX 10.4 does not appear to be using my GPU for anything other than playback and maybe transcoding.

I am using a AMD 480 on one machine but in Istat I can see that it is the CPU doing the encoding as soon as I hit play I am using the GPU.

I also use a 2013 MBPR and see similar if not the same results there. (haven't used Istat) it took me about an hour to export a transcoded unrendered 4min clip the other week where the most intensive effect used was color finale. activity monitor showed about 15-20% use for the cpu with no other programs on the Mac running?

Playback seems fine and much improved on both machines but exporting is definitely much, much slower on both!
