XDCAM EX crashing FCP10.4 19 Dec 2017 16:09 #92513

On a job today and having major issues with XDCAM EX (PMW300) footage and FCP10.4

Every time during the import window when you twirl down a folder containing a BPAV, FCP instantly quits.

Start FCP, insert a SxS card into a reader FCP instantly quits.

Anyone else having any issues along these lines???

Cheers

Matt

Me too. Just done a clean install on a 2013 rMBP with High Sierra and FCPx 10.4 and unusable with XDCAM EX media without transcoding with another tool such as AME or Sony XDCAM Browser.
I upgraded to 10.4 on my Sierra system first and didn't get the crash with XDCAM media but was not able to see all the camera clips I knew were on the card - there is an issue with Spanned clips and also clips longer than 4GB which get split by the camera due to FAT32 limit.
Basically this is a big problem for XDCAM EX users - will test the MXF based XDCAM HD tomorrow.
Premiere Pro correctly sees the same media on the same system - I'd rather stick with FCPx but hopefully will get fixed soon.
Can anyone please confirm whether the Sony SXS plugin is required for 10.4? The Apple site suggests not but I've held off installing on my new clean build system. Does it solve the problem?

Yes, the Sony SxS software/driver is still required. Looking on Sony's website, it states it doesn't support High Sierra and has no plans to at the moment. So, this may be the root of your problem.
This is the reason I've stayed with Sierra and I also use MXF and ExFat Sony HD files. But I did upgrade to 10.4 and posted that import speeds have slowed considerably which is a pain when on tight turnarounds, etc. FCPX Guru posted that this has been found with users that upgraded to 10.4 rather than carry out a clean install.

Just realised that I'm talking about the Sony SxS UDF driver, is this the one you mean?

Curious about this as Apple says it supports XDCAM EX in FCPX from v10.2. see here from support.apple.com/en-us/HT202252

Final Cut Pro X 10.2 supports Sony XAVC, XAVC S, XDCAM, XDCAM HD, and XDCAM EX media.
Before importing Sony XAVC and XDCAM media, verify that Pro Video Formats is installed on your system. Check for software updates and, if necessary, install the latest Pro Video Formats. (You can also manually download Pro Video Formats from the Apple Support website.) No additional software is required.

Perhaps you need to update Pro Video Formats? It says no additional software is required.

Hi Finbo.
Think the UDF driver is just for the Mxf cameras like Pmw400 and pmw500 widely used in broadcast.
I’m using an EX-3 which is mp4 format on Fat32 formatted card.
I knew that the older optical disc Sony cameras were no longer supported natively.
I’ll try the Sony xdcam plugin but the Apple supported cameras page says the ex-3 is supported without it.
Either way I did also notice the slower importing on Sierra with 10.4

Cheers

Thanks for reply. As I did a clean install I would hope to have the latest pro video codecs. I was wanting to avoid unnecessarily installing the Sony plugin as apple claim it’s nit required but may try anyway.

Hi
Yes, we are having the same problems
We rely on FCPX to be a stable and Professional editing programme, this makes it almost unusable! our system is also crashing with large PSD graphics. Not impressed with Apples response either.

Hi everybody,
I've had this issue last month on a documentary. FCPX crashed ingesting XDCAM with medias outside of the library on a DDP Server. I managed ingesting the XDCAM creating a new library with medias inside the bundle and the library stored on the internal DD on an the old Mac Pro. After that i've copied the media from one library to the other and consolidate the medias.
