Hi everyone,

As you already know, we’ve just released mFlare 2 for FCPX and Apple Motion: www.motionvfx.com/mplugs-1.html


It’s been the most anticipated FCPX plugin of 2017. Those who purchased it and those who tested it in the beta version (we had over 50 beta testers!) love it and we are getting a lot of “thank you”.

I personally want to thank each and everyone of you for supporting what we do.

I’m wondering what are your personal feelings about the plugin in general, its quality and the work we did on all the separate features - I’d appreciate if you could share them with us in replies. Moreover, it would be lovely if those who use it shared their work as samples of mFlare 2 usage, so we could post it on our social media channels.

Let me know your thoughts.

I think the new tracker is outstanding on certain machines. I don't however, like the fact that mFlare2 doesn't work properly with certain graphics cards. I wish I knew that on the front end. I have a 2016 iMac with 16GB of RAM, Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200 1536 MB and the tracker doesn't work. Customer service said that it is a known issue with certain graphics cards and that I should "Upgrade my computer" if I want to do any serious editing. I think people need to know this.

Even though you're usually tracking a small portion of your video, there's no way of telling how the tracked object will behave so the entire frame needs to be sent to the tracker. This can be a problem when attempting to track a high resolution video from an integrated GPU as they can't handle large textures very well (most likely because they don't have their own video memory but "borrow" it from your RAM). This is not an mFlare2 issue, the same problem occurs in Motion 5 when you attempt to, for example, use some GPU-accelerated filters on really large layers.

There's an easy way around this in FCPX though:
1) create a temporary HD project,
2) drop your high res footage onto the Timeline,
3) drop it into a Compound Clip (Alt+G),
4) apply mFlare onto the CC and set it up as you like (edit, track etc),
5) copy the entire Compound Clip (or just the tracked effect) to your main Project.

Compound Clips will have the same resolution as the project they are created in (in this case 1080p) so you should be able to track them without any problems, even on integrated graphics.

Nonetheless, seeing how Apple tends to throw Intel's graphics (alone) to the majority of their Macs, let's hope their support will improve over time.

Luckily, I have a second machine and the tracker works fine in that one. I tried the compound clip thing a bunch and it didn't help my situation. I am fine with using it on one machine at this point. That said, it works beautifully on my other machine. You guys have put a lot of thought and work into this one. I will post work once I finish some.

We've been asked a lot about the differences between mF2.0 and the first version so here's a quick comparison.

1. First things first - mFlare2 has been rewritten from the ground up, which means that it is a completely new piece of software. This allowed us to take all the best things about mFlare, add a bunch of new useful features and base them on the latest tech available on the current generation of hardware.

2. mFlare's redesigned interface is no longer a standalone app. It runs directly within FCPX/Motion 5 so you don't have to wait for it to load each time you want to adjust something. Also, since its integration is so tight, all changes are being instantly updated in your host app's viewport.






3. The built-in Mocha tracker. This one is a biggie, no doubt about it. Ever needed to manually keyframe your lens flare's position to match a handheld or even a fairly stable camera? This is a really tedious task and the results are usually far from perfect, the effect jitters and makes it obvious that it was added in post. This is also a problem with point trackers, both integrated into Motion 5 and offered as third-party software.



Mocha's award-winning tracking technology will make sure that your lens flare follows the tracked object perfectly, even with motion blur or during focusing. Besides, mFlare2's Mocha integration is the easiest one out there so the learning curve is a lot more friendly for new users.

4. More organic behavior. All elements were designed to not only look but also behave very naturally during movement. Several of them animate automatically based on your light position. You can also use the new Flicker, Dynamic Animation and Track Brightness features for a more organic behavior both on and off screen. Sneaking in lens flare effects has never been easier.



5. Color Palette. First mFlare provided two options to colorize the effect: you could either set it up manually for each element, which was a bit time consuming but looked better or set a global color for the entire thing, which didn't look as good but was very quick to set up.

mFlare2 of course allows you to set up custom colors for everything but it also includes a color palette generator that combines both flexibility and speed - you simply pick the dominating/main color and adjust the handles for secondary or tertiary colors. It will automatically match the palette for a more pleasing scheme using actual values from the light spectrum to make sure that it looks as realistic as possible. Of course all 100 included presets support it so you can match them with your footage with just a couple of clicks while keeping all color variations.

6. Post effects. mFlare2 includes additional post-processing effects that can make your effect even more realistic. Slight adjustments to the Blur, Aberration and Grain effects will often drastically improve the end result.



These are just the main differences, there's a bunch of other stuff too: the new custom on screen controls with convenient "shortcuts" for adjusting the flare's overall brightness and size, a customizable preset library with Favorites section where you can access presets you use most, Solo preview within the interface where you can see individual elements more clearly, useful tooltips for ALL buttons and parameters within mFlare's interface, the Generate Alpha option which allows you to export the effect from Motion 5 and use it in other apps and much, much more.

Hopefully this post shows the advantages of mFlare2 over its predecessor :)

Aaaaah, I remember the first mFlare on the just released FCPX. I shot a music video and entirely keyframed every flares...
I can't wait to upgrade to mFlare2 and try it out
