FCPX Preferences won't 'stick' after 10.3.2 update? 30 Jan 2017 18:40 #85328

Hello all,

The recent major update to FCPX is okay. Don't see how it's any better though... some helpful quick links/tools like being able to zoom in or out of the timeline or retiming or reversing groups of clips are now a bit of a pain to have to dig for. But cosmetically, it looks nice.

My one major gripe is the fact that my preferences for my index of files won't seem to 'stick'. IE- Name, Duration, Content Created, Camera Name, Start, Stop, etc.

I like them in that order. The default order begins with Name, Start, Stop, etc.

I like to organize the files by 'File Type' as well, but that will also reset to 'None' at completely random intervals.

Sometimes they'll stick for a day or so. But most of the time, after I quit FCPX, shut down my computer or open a new library, those preferences will reset to factory settings. So I'm finding myself re-arranging how I want them ordered several times a day on three different editing systems (two iMac's, one MacBook Pro... all quad i7 machines, post 2014).

I posted on the Apple Discussion forums but the only people who chimed in there all claimed they've never experienced this. I find that hard to believe. I even had to wipe one of my machines after a catastrophic freeze. Figured I'd only run the bare-bones, native FCPX program on that machine for a few days just to troubleshoot (with no plug-ins installed).

Same deal. Nothing changed. So I can rule out plug-ins.

Tried the usual stuff... trashed preferences, trashed the app and re-installed.

It's all futile.

Is anyone else cursed with this oddity? I'm just hoping I'm not alone and one day the FCP team will release an update that will include making these index preferences stick! And maybe bring back the buttons in the toolbar to quickly be able to retime and/or reverse a large group of clips at one time.... or the zoom bar at the bottom of the program to zoom in and out on the timeline quickly.

I don't rearrange the columns but I have noticed other things not sticking. Before 10.3.2 the volume meter size wouldn't stick. They fixed that but now nothing else sticks, even if you save a workspace. The effects browser for instance likes to resize itself against my wishes. Restoring from the saved workspace (which I shouldn't ever have to do unless I load another workspace) does not restore it correctly.

Report to Apple.

You're not the only one. Report it to Apple. From what I've read a lot of people are seeing this.

Yes, known bug, feedback form time.

Timeline Index and the Browser both revert to the default layout every time you launch FCPX. I see it daily. Very frustrating.

I love Apple... and I love Final Cut Pro... but man... seems like with major updates to FCPX it's one step forward, two steps back!

I filled out one of those forms, again. I'm not sure if anyone ever reads that stuff. None of my suggestions over the years have been addressed. Hopefully this problem will be... if so many people are experiencing it.

It's also baffling how nobody... and I mean nobody... said they were experiencing the same problem over at the Apple Discussion forums. I'm beginning to think that place is censored. Sometimes I'll post there and I feel like people treat me like I must be making things up just to make Apple look bad. Here's one of my threads about this issue at least:

I can honestly assure you that the FCPX team does in fact read every feedback form, reviews it, catalogs it. There are too many to respond personally to each one. Every major upgrade to any application will have bugs that will take a few updates to totally fix. Remember, we got a brand new UI that was written fresh from the ground up. That's going to be difficult to do without a glitch here and there. This happens will all apps.

The Apple forum is a bit more Wild West like than here. At least here it is more focused, you have more professionals. I visit the Apple forum to help out on occasion, but it is actually my least favorite pro app forum.

A small workaround for the clip size reverting is doing CMD-1, SHIFT-Z, which selects the Browser then puts them in thumbnail-per-clip. That of course assumes you want thumbnail per clip and use the Browser in filmstrip mode.

It may not be a big deal but I don't see why they shipped it like this. From a UI standpoint it is a "common user path" case, and it's highly reproducible. It's not an edge case that happens way down in an infrequent UI path. This is the kind of slipshod QC you expect with a free utility, not with a mainstream product.

Can't believe with the latest update that they have not addressed this. Really disappointing.
