Hi,

There are so many different stories about music in video's. I only like to know the facts. My question is regarding wedding videos on video platform like Youtube or Vimeo. When Youtube and Vimeo are allowing my music, is this kind of a check enough, or do I need a written approval of the music owner? I get paid to make a video.

Sorry for my ignorance, but many thanks in advance!

Touchy subject, but basically you need permission to use any piece of music you don't have actual ownership or rights to use, when you're making money off of it. I know event videographers have been doing it and no one has ever sued them over it, so no one bothers worrying.

YouTube and Vimeo may flag music their web bots deem as having a copyright, so that may be a bummer.

only facts? do laws offer facts …??

• YT doesn't allow or forbid any music. Only the owner of publishing rights do.
• Do you own publishing rights to what you're publishing? (at first, doesn't matter for what purpose or reason)
• as you do it for living: bad reputation, when your clients try to upload 'their' movie and receive a 'Cease & Desist' from Sony et al … (got one 4 (four!) years after publishing a home video, recording a stunt-show - they used theme of Pirates of the Caribbean …)

General advice:
• publish only what you're entitled to … music, graphics, people, locations …
• never trust legal (or medicine) advice on the internet ;)

"YT doesn't allow or forbid any music."

If only I had a nickel for every time I had to challenge YouTube over music content they blocked because their web bot thought it was someone else's copyrighted work.

doesn't contradicts what I said, quote, now less distorting the meaning:
"YT doesn't allow or forbid any music. Only the owner of publishing rights do."

car-analogy:
… it's not the officer who doesn't allow you to drive a car boozed, he's just the executive…
